Sinopsis:
Jane (Meryl Streep), madre de tres hijos ya adultos, es la propietaria de un restaurante pastelería de Santa Barbara y, tras una década divorciada, mantiene una amigable relación con su ex-marido, el abogado Jake (Alec Baldwin). Pero cuando Jane y Jake tienen que salir de la ciudad para la graduación universitaria de su hijo, las cosas comienzan a complicarse. Una inocente comida lleva a lo inimaginable: una recaída. Con Jake casado de nuevo con una mujer mucho más joven, Agness (Lake Bell), Jane se convierte de pronto en "la otra". Y en medio de todo este embrollo se ve envuelto Adam (Steve Martin), un arquitecto contratado para renovar la cocina de Jane.
